Wildlife

The Ebro Delta is the most important wetland at the Mediterranean coast in the Iberic Peninsula, protected day and night by the mountains of the Port de Beseit, of 1447m of height.

The Ebro Delta is a paradise for the birds, there are more than 350 species of birds of the 600 in Europe. This variety makes of the Ebro Delta in an international reference. Special mention for the maritime birds colonies, the most important in the Mediterranean zone, the Larus audouinií seagull, the Sterna Sanduicencis and the Larus genei. Another species of interest at the Delta are: Tadornatadorna, the Phoenicopteusroseus, the Plegadis Falcinellus, the Glaeropatinsola and the Haematopu s Ostralegus, and others.

The confluence with the river and the sea contribute for a big variety of species.

The presence of big mamals is not comun. In the Delta we can find foxes (Vulpes vulpes), hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) and weasels (Mustela nivalis). More commune are the water rats (Arvicola sapidus), mices (Mus sp.) and Crocidura sp. Currently six species of bats are in recovery phase.

At the “Els Ports” Natural Reserve, there is an important presence of wild goats (Capra pyrenaicahispanica). Also we find boars (Susscrofa), Meles meles on the highest parts, otters (Lutra lutra), Genetta genetta, wild cats (Felis Sylvestris), rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus), and squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris).

About birds, at “Els Ports”: vultures and other species like Falco tinnunculus, Falco peregrinus, Aquila chrysaetos, Hieraetus Jascictus at Horta zone Buteo buteo. Nocturnal animals Athene noctua, Strix aluco and Tyto Alba. In summer it is important the presence of Luscinia megarhynchos, Oriolus oriolus, Cuculus canorus, Streptopelia turtur and Merop sapiaster.

Triturus marmoratus, the frogs Ranaperezi and Pelodytes punctatus. In Horta the Bufo bufo), Alytes Obstetricans and Bufo calamita. Reptilians: green snake (Malpolon monspessulanus), the water snake (Natrix maura). And the Tarentola mauritanica and Lacerta lepida

The most important spider is Agrope bruennichi. At the highest parts of “Els Ports”, we find the butterfly Graellsia isabelae. Also, the Oreocarabus guadarramus, the Yamina sanguinea, Centhos phodruslevantinus, Paraphaenops breuilianus and the Tycobitinus escolai.

In protection there is the small snail Cochlostoma fontqueri. In the rivers live the Chondrostoma toxostoma, Barbus bocageis sp graellsii and the Rutilus arcasii.
